Gender discrimination in Bangladesh

We know that gender discrimination in Bangladesh is one of the major problems. Gender discrimination is the unequal treatment of someone based on their sex. It is evident from several research findings that, male children are getting more food or the best quality food compared to female children. Not only for distribution of food, male children are getting privilege for education, shelter, decision making and so on. This is why from the childhood they become brave and can contribute more in their future life.

While a female child most of the time are not even allowed to talk freely to their parents or other senior member of the family or relatives thus a kind of shyness develop within them. The discrimination continues in the job or service life where women are discriminated for their position, salary, leave and so on. Gender discrimination is the difference between male and female in respect of enjoying human rights. It is severe in Bangladesh where it starts at birth. Female children, girls, women and destitute old women are the worst sufferers.

In the prehistoric period, the hunting & gathering society men took the lead in hunting while female were used to gather food. Hunting was considered as more prestigious because animal was the main source of protein. It was a tradition that who took leads in hunting; was given the best part of the hunted animal. So a trend developed from long time back that male do the important job than female so they should be given more privilege and importance though female’s work was more in quantity.

Now this time trend already changed but human psychology remains unchanged regarding women in our country. Moreover people think girl will go away after getting married so giving them priority is not a good investment. Moreover, during marriage parents are to give dowry for their girl which is a burden for a poor family. All of these might be the reason of gender discrimination in the society. But is satisfying to note that situation is getting improved and now lot of parents thinks they should give equal facilities to both male and female.

Actually, for this resign women are overused as the basis for sexual stereotyping in our society as early marriage, illiteracy, leck of empowerment. We should change our mentality to women and to be needed awareness by media (print, electronic, drama etc.) It has some long-term negative effects on the body and mind of the girls and women in the family. They could not think that they are perfect human beings. It is expected that, if women become more educated and their participation at work increase; they situation will improve quickly.

At last I want to say that if we want to develop with global recession making its way in to the developing world our country in future. We will have to develop our women’s as educated, healthy, empowerment and also to be involved with income generating activity.
